As Part of Global Polio Endgame Strategy Union Government Launches IPV Injection

Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) injection has launched by The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda in New Delhi as a part of the global polio endgame strategy in New Delhi. The launching of this injection is a part of India՚s next step in Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) to fight against polio virus in the country.

Key facts:

  • IPV would provide double protection to children from polio i.e.. orally and in the form of injection.
  • UIP in the beginning will cover six states including Uttar Pardesh, Madhya Pardesh, Bihar, Assam, Punjab and Gujarat in the first phase.
  • Union Government would switch to IPV together with the oral polio vaccine (OPV) to destroy polio virus in the country by April 2016.
  • Now babies their third dose of OPV will be an injection with IPV as part of India՚s efforts to boost its polio injection programme.
  • From 27 March 2014, India was certified polio - free country but the injection programme continues since two of its neighbors Afghanistan and Pakistan still remain polio - endemic countries.

About Polio virus:

  • Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly communicable viral of several disease, it can easily affects young children below age of 5.

Transmission:

  • This virus can easily transmit from person - to - person. The main reason of this vires is the faecal - oral route (e. g. contaminated water or food) .
  • And when they entered in body it grows in the intestine, from where it can attack the nervous system and can cause paralysis.

Symptoms:

  • A primary sign of this polio virus includes fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness in the neck, and pain in the limbs.
  • In some cases, it causes permanent paralysis. There is no medicine for polio virus; it can only be prevented by immunization.
