Google՚s Loon Project Has Been Approved by Union Government

Loon project of Google for providing Internet connectivity by using large balloons has get approval by Union Government. It was declared by Google CEO Sunder Pichai in New Delhi after meeting with Union Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

  • On a preliminary basis the project will started first and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be partner with the project for expedition of Internet connectivity in the country.

About Google՚s Loon project

  • Google aims to provide internet access to rural and remote area at low cost; it is Google՚s motivated research and development project.
  • Regarding to this project high altitude floating telecom tower balloons is positioned at a height of 20 km above earth՚s surface for transmission of internet services.
  • Each balloon is capable to provide full wireless broadband internet coverage for 40 km area.
  • Main source of power for these balloons are solar panels.
  • To fill the network gaps in remote areas such as mountains and deserts these balloons have transceivers to connect with cell phone networks.
  • In New Zealand, California and Brazil this technology is already successfully tested by Google.
  • Google also has partner with the Common Service Centre (CSC) and Internet Sathi programme (ISP) with aim to expand Internet reach in 3 lakh villages particularly for women training.
  • Google is also concentrating on carrying its various products in many more Indian languages.
