Kerala Tourism has won 2015 Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) award for its Muziris Heritage Project. This award was in the ‘Heritage & Culture’ category. The dedications in the project to get this award are maintenance and protection of the ancient town of historical and cultural implication and Kodungallur in Thrissur district of Kerala, Ernakulam, pulled its uniqueness and impact on the local community.

Kodungallur : Kodungallur is a municipality in the Thrissur district of Kerala, India. Muziris was usually identified as being at Kodungallur.

Ernakulam : Ernakulam is the eastern vibrant portion of Kochi in central Kerala, India. It is the commercial capital of Kerala.

Ancient Muziris : Muziris was an ancient seaport and urban Centre which dates from at least the 1st century BC. It is located at the mouth of the Periyar River in Kerala.

  • It was a key Centre for trade in ancient times between southern India and Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Roman Empire.
  • In bardic Sangam literature its historic importance has been stated and a number of classical European historical sources.

Muziris Heritage Project : Muziris Heritage Project’s historic and cultural implication to reestablish Muziris in Kerala tourism department has an ambitious tourism venture. It was started in 2006 and it also covers various other historically important sites and memorials in central Kerala.

Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) award : These awards are given by Pacific Asia Travel Association and sponsored by Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) for last 20 years. 25 different organizations and individuals are presented each year in recognition of the achievements. It should be noted that PATA is a membership association working to promote the responsible development of travel and tourism in the Asia Pacific region.

The PATA Grand Awards are offered to entries in four principal categories: Marketing, Education and Training, Environment, and Heritage & Culture.
