UNESCO names Conakry as World Book Capital for 2017 [ Current Affairs ]

What is UNESCO? The abbreviation for UNESCO is The United Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and it is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). Its purpose is to contribute peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture.

Conakry is the Capital city of the Republic of Guinea which been named as World Book Capital for year 2017 by UNESCO. About Conakry:

  1. Conakry is the capital and largest city of Guinea.
  2. Conakry is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean and serves as the economic, financial and cultural Centre of Guinea.
  3. Its population was estimated in 2009 at 1,667,864.
  4. Because of this selection Conakry become the 17th city in the World to be designated as World Book Capital.
  5. At present, Incheon city of South Korea is World Book Capital for year 2015.

About World Book Capital

  • It is a designation established by UNESCO to a particular city every year since 2001.
  • It seeks to promote books and reading and the dedication of all players in the book industry.
  • The designation runs for 1 year starting from UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day which was April 23 till April 22 of the year 2001.
  • Madrid is capital of Spain. In 2001 it was the first city to be recognized as World Book Capital.
  • In case of India, New Delhi was recognized as World Book Capital in 2003.
  • Wroclaw city of Poland has been chosen as World Book Capital in year 2016.
