15 March is observed as World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) annually for celebration and solidarity within the international consumer movement. Importance of Day: It provides an opportunity to promote the basic rights of all consumers

  • Demand those rights that must be respected and protected
  • For those protesting against the market abuses and social injustices.
  • “Antibiotics off the menu” is theme of 2016 to stop the sale of meat raised with the use of antibiotics important to human medicine.
  • It seeks out to extent awareness about antibiotic resistance driven by overdoing of antibiotics in agriculture to help faster growth and to avoid sicknesses rather than treat diseases.

About World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD)

  • To commemorate the historic address given by the then US President John F Kennedy to the US congress in 1962 WCRD is observed on 15 March.
  • He had outlined the definition of consumer rights for the first time in his historic address.
  • He was the first world leader who has officially outline consumer rights.
  • On 15 March 1983 the first WCRD was observed and since then it became an important occasion for mobilizing citizen action.
  • WCRD was observed with the theme “Helping consumers choose healthy diets” in 2015.
  • 24th December is observed as National Consumer Day in India.
  • On this day Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the President in 1986.
