3rd Phase of TEQIP Approved by Union Government [ Current Affairs - International Relations ]


The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given green signal to the proposal for initiation of the Third Phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), and the project will be implemented as a Central Sector Scheme with total project outlay of 3600 crore rupees.

The Focus States in 3rd Phase of TEOIP are :

  • Hill States:
  1. Himachal Pradesh
  2. Jammu and Kashmir
  3. Uttarakhand
  • Low Income States:
  1. Bihar
  2. Chhattisgarh
  3. Jharkhand
  4. Madhya Pradesh
  5. Rajasthan
  6. Uttar Pradesh
  • North-Eastern States:
  1. Sikkim
  2. Assam
  3. Meghalaya
  4. Tripura
  5. Mizoram
  6. Manipur
  7. Nagaland
  8. Arunachal Pradesh
  •  Union Territory
  1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The main objective of TEQIP

  • Improve standards of academic by appointing faculties, training faculty in better teaching methods, accreditation, and improved research outputs in institution in Focus States/UTs.
  • Increase financial and academic autonomy to make administration department of institutions better.
  • Improve the efficiency of assessment of higher transition rates and student learning.
  • Release the fund quickly to institutes as a Direct Funds Transfer (DFT) System.


  • World Bank and union government have jointly launched the TEQIP in 2003 as a long term programme which will be implemented in three phases.
  • TEQIP-I:
  1. It was started in 2003 and completed on March 31st, 2009.
  2. At the first phase total 127 institutes across 13 States including 18 Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) were covered in it.
  1. It was started in August 2010 and completed in October 2016.
  2. Total 23 States/Union Territories (UTs) and 191 Institutes (including 26 CFTIs) were covered under the second phase across the country.
  • After the successful implementation of both the phase the third phase gets approval of Union government in October 2016.
