Canada to Hold World’S First Zika Vaccine Test on Humans [ Current Affairs ]

Canadian university are going to conduct the world’s first Zika vaccine test on humans. In this test researchers from Laval University and based in Quebec City from Canada. In the world they are first international researchers team to complete all of the steps in the regulatory process for the test.

  • Vaccine that is under development will be tested on humans in the near future. Till now, on mice vaccines have been tested.
  • Development of the Zika vaccine has been authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada.
  • As per World Health Organization (WHO), more than a dozen pharmaceutical companies are working on developing a Zika vaccine like France’s Sanofi and India’s Bharat Biotech.

About Zika virus:

  • Zika virus is spread primarily by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
  • Zika virus was first detected in rhesus Monkey in 1947 and was reported in human being in 1952.
  • This virus is capable of causing serious birth defects.
  • There is no exact treatment or vaccine currently available to treat Zika disease.
  • The best form of prevention is protection against mosquito bites and clearing stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.
  • WHO has forecast growth in the Americas and as many as four million people are infected.
