Jnanpith awardee Gurdial Singh a one of the greatest Punjabi writer, novelist and short story writer passed away at Bathinda, Punjab at the age of 83 years. His novels and short stories are mainly focus on the economically and socially marginalized people in rural Punjab.

About Gurdial Singh

  • Gurdial Singh was born on 10 January 1933 in Bhaini Fateh in British Punjab.
  • His first short story was Bhaganwale which he had penned in 1957.
  • Marhi Da Deeva (1964) was his most popular novel.
  • He has written 10 novels and some of the popular novels are:
    1. Anhoe (1966)
    2. Addh Chanani Raat (1972)
    3. Anhe Ghore Da Daan (1976)
    4. Parsa (1991)
  • Two of his novels have been made into films including.
  • Many novels are translated in several Indian languages including English, on his two novels Marhi Da Deeva and Anhe Ghore Da Daan film was posturized respectively in 1989 and 2011.
