India Declares Itself Bird Flu Free [ Current Affairs ]


The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers welfare has declared India as Avian Influenza (H5N1) or bird flu free and has notified the same to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

  • After no any cases of Avian Influenza (H5N1) was reported in the country after the last case in June 2016 at Humnabad, Bidar district, Karnataka.

Various control measures adopted

  • Mark all the poultry population such as destruction of eggs, litter, feed and other infected materials.
  • Restricted movement of poultry and poultry products in outbreak area.
  • Cleaned infected premises and the Post Operation Surveillance Plan (POSP).
  • Take care of outbreaks areas since completion of the operation.
  • Post the surveillance has shown no indication of presence of Avian Influenza.

 About Avian influenza (AI)

  • AI commonly or bird flu is a transmittable viral and zoonotic infection of birds which spread domestic poultry and cause large-scale outbreaks of serious disease.
  • AI viruses are divided into 2 groups according to its skill to cause disease in poultry:
  1. High pathogenicity: high death rates up to 100% mortality within 48 hours in some poultry species.
  2. Low pathogenicity: this are not usually related with severe disease but causes outbreaks in poultry.

Human Infections:

  • Most avian influenza viruses generally do not infect humans except A(H7N9) and A(H5N1) virus which caused serious infections in people which is causes because of direct or indirect contact with infected live or dead poultry.
