India Signs MOU with US to Set Up LIGO Project [ Current Affairs ]

About LIGO Project: LIGO stands for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory. It is aimed to directly observe gravitational waves of cosmic origin. Gravitational waves of cosmic origin were predicted firstly by Einstein’s relativity’s theory in 1916.

  • Scientists of LIGO who recently proved gravitational waves theory.
  • The Cabinet has approved USD1200 crores for this project.
  • By this project, a third detector would be able to ‘triangulate’ the source of gravitational waves.
  • The construction of the third LIGO interferometer is expected to be efficient by 2023.
  • It will improve the capability of scientists to identify the sources of gravitational waves and analysis of the signals.
  • Each observatory of LIGO project supports an L-shapedultra-high vacuum system which is able to measure 4 kilometers on its each side.
  • In each vacuum system, up to fiveinterferometers can be set up.

About the MOU between India and US:

  • India and the US signed a memorandum of understanding for set up a new Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in India.
  • India’s Secretary of Department of Atomic Energy Sekhar Basu and the US’s National Science Foundation (NSF) France Cordova signed the MoU for this project in the presence of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Prime Minister called the LIGO project as a great example of India-US scientific partnership.
  • This MOU will be the first step toward an additional gravitational wave detector which will be located in India.
