India at 143rd Position on Health Index [ Current Affairs ]


India ranked 143rd in the health Index in a 188 countries list. The index was prepared based on mortality rates, malaria, and hygiene and air pollution. This first global analysis to assess countries on sustainable development goal (SDGs) health performance was conducted by UN General Assembly, below are the highlights:

  • A new index developed to assess each country’s achievement on a range of health indicators.
  • India was six places ahead of Pakistan. Unfortunately way behind even the warn torn countries.
  • Top five countries are:
  1. Iceland
  2. Singapore
  3. Sweden
  4. Finalnd
  5. UK

Central African Republic, Somalia, and South Sudan fared at lowest spot

  • India’s neighbor countries fared quite well
  1. Sri Lanka 79th
  2. China 92nd
  3. Syria 117th
  4. Iraq 128th
  5. Pakistan 149th
  6. Bangladesh 151st
  • The health index is part of sustainable development goal (SDG) health performance.
  • The Index was prepared by the international collaboration on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD).
  • Iceland was at first spot with a score of 85 in 2015 health Index. India scored only 42, whereas US was ranked at 28th position with 75 score.
  • Sri Lanka, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and others have eliminated malaria and scored 100 on that health indicator whereas India only scored 10 points.
  • The deadline of achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target was 2015 and India was close to the target of 42 deaths per 1,000 births. India had 45 deaths per 1,000 births in 2014. India scored 39 points on a scale of 0-100 on the MDG indicator.
  • India scored above 93 points in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) a diverse group of communicable diseases, and on harmful alcohol consumption.
