India՚s First Hpv Vaccine for Public Health Programme in Schools Has Been Launched by Delhi

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for a public health programme for school children has been launched by the Delhi. With this launch Delhi becomes India՚s first state to do so. This vaccination programme is divided in two phases and completed within the current academic year 2015 - 16.

  • At the first phase this Vaccine will be given to 1 to 1.5 lakh girls studying in class 10 of government schools later this initiative will be expanded to the private schools also.
  • At the second phase the vaccine will be given to girls between the age of 9 and 13.

About Human Papillomavirus (HPV) :

  • HPV is the papillomavirus family DNA virus.
  • It is largely a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that causes genital warts and cancer of Cervix, Vulva, Vagina, Penis, Oropharynx and anus.
  • 70% of Cancer cases are particularly caused by HPV16 and HPV18.
  • The contagion can be prevented through routine screening and vaccines that are safe and effective.
  • Up to now total 170 types of HPV are identified by researchers and among them 40 are typically transmitted by the sexual contact among this all types Vaccine is only available for few of them.
