Light and Heavy 10 Years Old Diesel Vehicles Banned by NDT in Six Major Cities of Kerala

Light and heavy diesel vehicles which are more than 10 years old has been banned by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in the six major cities of Kerala. And these six major cities are:

  1. Thiruvananthapuram (state capital)
  2. Kochi (commercial capital)
  3. Kollam
  4. Thrissur
  5. Kozhikode
  6. Kannur
  • Justice Swatanter Kumar the NGT Circuit Bench comprising NGT chairperson and expert member Bikram Singh Sajwan has given the Order in this regard when hearing a petition filed by Lawyers Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF) which had required action against highly polluting diesel vehicles like trucks and buses.

Other suggestion of NGT:

  • Put ban on new registration of any diesel vehicle in the capacity of 2000 CC and more, apart from public transport and local authority vehicles.
  • If any vehicle breaks this direction, 5000 rupees shall be taken as environmental compensation from them.
  • Pollution control board (PCB) or traffic police will collect that and also shall maintain separate account.
  • And then these collected funds should be used for improvement of environment in these cities.

About NGT:

  • National Green Tribunal (NGT) was founded on 18th October 2010 under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010 which allows creation of a special tribunal for quick judgments of the environmental issues related cases.
  • Under India՚s constitutional provision of Article 21 National Green Tribunal Act 2010 was passed, which declares the citizens of India the right to a healthy environment.
