NITI Aayog Plans for Securing 50 Medals in 2024 Olympics [ Current Affairs - Sports ]

Union Government’s think-tank NITI Aayog has made short-term and medium-to-long term action plan to achieve 50 medals in 2024 summer Olympics. This was a result of India’s extremely poor performance at 2016 Rio Olympics.

India it was determined, has excellent talent in various disciplines, but still fails to perform well in Olympics. India got only two medals in Rio Olympics Bronze medal by Wrestler Sakshi Malik, and Silver medal by Shuttler P V Sindhu .

Short-Term Vision (4-8 years):

  • Focus on a high priority group of sports. Organize sportspersons into three groups for each priority sport.
  • Recognize the potential of regional and native sports.
  • Appoint excellent coaches and a grading system to give appropriate feedback to coaches.
  • Upgrade existing SAI training centers, sports injury insurance scheme.
  • Facilitate creation of sports academies for individual sports.
  • Create digital database for sports
  • Pass the national sports code and sports Bill.

Medium to Long-Term Vision (8-15 years):

  • Recognize talent at a young age
  • Introduce a dedicated training programme for coaches.
  • Arrange sports programs in schools.
  • Encourage development of sports infrastructure by PPP or fully private mode.
  • Introduce psychological and health support division in each school.
  • Encouraging a culture of sports in the country.
  • Host international events especially in priority sports.

Fixed 4-year contract will be signed between SAI and Group A sportspersons after each Olympics to meet the funding requirement for the next Olympics and other international events in between.
