A novel spectroscopic technique has been introduced by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Scientists to observe marked of present or former extraterrestrial life on the Mars.

  • The technique combined as SHERLOC (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals) on instrument dubbed which will be very helpful for NASA’s new Mars rover which is going to be launched in 2020 to observe marks of possibility of life on Mars.

New Mars rover will do:

  • The new Mars rover will analysis a region of the planet scientists believe could hold remnants of ancient microbial life.
  • Mars rover will collect samples of rocks and soil, and store them on the Martian surface and tack them to the Earth to more examine them.
  • The rover can speedily and non-invasively recognize sediments on the Mars that are comparatively unaltered which maintain much of their original composition.

How it will work?                                                                                         

  • The new technique will interpret marks Raman spectroscopy, a common, non-destructive process that geologists use to recognize chemical composition of ancient rocks.
  • The 2020 Mars rover contains SHERLOC which acquire Raman spectra from samples on or just below the Mar’s surface.
  • SHERLOC will be essential to find out whether life ever existed on Mars.
  • It will estimate the ratio of hydrogen to carbon grains from the substructure of the summits in Raman spectra.
