New nine breeds of indigenous farm animals has been recently identified and registered based on scientifically produced indication by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) after approval of the Breed registration Committee.

  • 1 breed of cattle
  • 2 breeds of goat and sheep
  • 2 breeds of sheep
  • 3 breeds of pig
  • 1 breed of chicken
  • The 9 newly identified and registered breeds are:

  1. Badri cow  in Uttarakhand
  2. Kodi Adu goat in Tamil Nadu
  3. Teressa goat in Nicobar Island
  4. Kendrapada sheep in Odisha
  5. Chevaadu sheep in Tamil Nadu
  6. Nicobari pig in NicobarIsland
  7. Tenyi Vo pig in Nagaland
  8. Doom pig in Assam
  9. Kaunayenchicken in Manipur

  • So the total number of indigenous breeds of livestock has reached to 160 in India including:

  1. 40 cattle breeds
  2. 13 buffalo breeds
  3. 26 goat breeds
  4. 42 sheep breeds
  5. 6 horses ponies breeds
  6. 9 camel breeds
  7. 6 pig breeds
  8. 1 donkey breeds
  9. 17 chicken breeds
  • The main objectives behind identification and registration of indigenous breeds is:

  • To save them or protect them
  • Identify their area-specific suitability and capabilities to fight agent’s sickness.
  • To give fill of ownership in local communities which are responsible for development of indigenous breeds.
  • For Inventorisation, conservation, improvement and sustainable utilization of animal genetic resources of the country.

About National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR)

  • NBAGR was founded on 21st September 1984 at Bangalore for identification, characterization, evaluation, conservation and utilization of livestock and poultry genetic resources of the country.
  • Previously its proposal was made in 1926 by then Royal Commission on Agriculture because they realized requirement of livestock production in India.
  • Latter in 1985 NBAGR was shifted to Karnal.
