Fijian diplomat Peter Thomson is elected as President of 71st session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the secret canvass election for the post by beating Andreas Mavroyiannis of Cyprus with 94 to 90 votes, with one abstention.

  • Peter Thomson creates history by electing for this post and becomes the first representative from the Pacific island states to get elected for the largely honorific post.
  • Thomson will take charge as a president from September 2016 at the commencement of the 71st session of UNGA and also will replace mandatory President Mogens Lykketoft.

About Peter Thomson

  • Peter Thomson is a Fijian diplomat and since February 2010, he was serving as Fijian Permanent Representative of the United Nations.
  • He was designated as President of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the year 2014.
  • He has renamed UN’s Group of Asian States to the new name of the Asia-Pacific Group.
  • In 2014 he was honored with the award of Officer of the Order of Fiji (highest honour of the Fijian honours system).
