Sushila Karki: First Woman Chief Justice of Nepal Takes Oath

Newly appointed Chief Justice Sushila Karki took oath of office and secrecy to become the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal at a special programme organised at the Presidential Residence, Sheetal Niwas.

  • Till June 6,2017 she will head the judiciary.
  • The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee on Sunday approved the name of Karki.
  • The Constitutional Council headed by Prime Minister KP Oli recommended her name for the post Chief Justice of Supreme court of Nepal
  • The oath was administered by President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
  • President Bhandari has also administered oath of office and secrecy to newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhi Prasad Yadav.

  • Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Speaker Onsari Gharti, Judges of the Supreme Court, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Chief Secretary, Chiefs of constitutional and security bodies and representatives of Nepal Bar Association, among others were present on the occasion.

About Sushila Karki:

  • She was born on 7 June 1952 in Nepal. She belongs to farmer՚s family.
  • In 1972: She completed a Bachelor՚s degree in Law from Tribhuvan University in Nepal.
  • In 1975She has done Masters in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) , Varanasi. India.
  • In 1979: She came in legal profession
  • In 1985: She also worked as an assistant teacher in Mahendra Multiple Campus, Dharan.
  • In 2009: She was appointed the Ad-Hoc Justice at the Supreme Court.
  • In November 2010: She was promoted to the Permanent Justice.
  • She is known for her zero tolerance against corruption in the judiciary.
  • She served as an Acting-Cheif-Justice and Justice at the Supreme Court of Nepal.
