A model of the Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile. A new generation Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), developed by India and Israel, was successfully test-fired twice on a day. In the test, the missile was launched from a mobile launcher in the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha. After receiving signal from the sensors, the missile successfully intercepted a moving inflight target supported by unmanned air vehicle (UAV) ‘Banshee’.

Key Facts:

  • Through the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) the MR-SAM has been developed, a laboratory of the DRDO in cooperation with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
  • The MR-SAM involves Multi-Functional Investigation and Threat Alert Radar (MF-STAR) system for finding, tracking and guidance.
  • Once they inducted into Indian Armed forces, the MR-SAM has strike ranges from 50 to 70 km. it will provide the users capability to neutralise any aerial intimidations.
  • The project is running several months behind schedule. The MRSAM is the land version of LRSAM (long range surface to air missile) that DRDO and IAI are developing for the Navy.
  • Previously in December 2015, Indian Navy had successfully test launched The long range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) test was successfully launched by Indian Navy and its also developed with Israel’s assistance. The test was accepted on the Western Seaboard by INS Kolkata.
