Union Cabinet Approves Setting Up of New AIIMS in Bhatinda [ Current Affairs ]

Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a new AIIMS at Bhatinda, Punjab under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The medical institution will have a hospital with capacity of 750 beds, which will include Emergency Beds, Private Beds, ICU Feature & Super Feature beds, and AYUSH beds.

Key Features:

  • New AIIMS at Bhatinda will provide super specialty health care to the population while creating a large pool of doctors and other health workers in this region.
  • This large pool of health workers will be available for primary and secondary level institutions. It will be facilities being created under National Health Mission (NHM).
  • The institute will also conduct research on prevalent regional diseases and other health issues and provide for better control and cure of such diseases.

Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY)

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of a new AIIMS at Bhatinda in Punjab under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
  • PMSSY is a Central Sector Scheme announced in August 2003.
  • The primary objective of the scheme is to correct the regional inequalities in availability of affordable and reliable tertiary level healthcare in the country.
  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), PM Narendra Modi-led Cabinet on Wednesday approved the establishment of a new AIIMS at Bhatinda in Punjab.
  • It also seeks to augment facilities for quality medical education in under-served or backward States.
