Union Government Launches “sugamya Pustakalaya” E-Library for Visually Disabled

Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prakash Javadekar and Thawar Chand Gehlot has launched Accessible E-Library ՚sugamya Pustakalaya for visually disable person under Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan of Prime Minister with more than 2 lakhs books in different languages at a function held in New Delhi.

About Sugamya Pustakalaya

  • Sugamya Pustakalaya is an online library which provides accessibility of content for Divyang and houses publications across various subjects and languages and multiple manageable formats.
  • E-Library is developed with the collaboration of National Institute of Visually Handicapped (NIVH) , member organizations of Daisy Forum of India and Bookshare and driven by TCS Access.
  • The E-Library is containing books in accessible formats for people with visual impairment and other print disabilities.
  • It will also merge with the libraries across India and the Globe, including the largest international library Bookshare.

National Institute of Visually Handicapped (NIVH) :

  • NIVH is a premier Institute is working in the field of visual disability under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • It mainly works for promoting the rights and dignity of persons with visual impairments.
  • Union Minister for Welfare has founded it on 9th October 1988.
  • Its regional center is located in Chennai.
  • It aims to make more landscapes opportunities for visually disabled persons.
