The Indian Institute of Chennai (IIT Madras) is one of the finest engineering institutes in India. About IIT Madras

IIT Madras was set up by an agreement in 1959 between the government of India and the German government with the aim of establishing an institution that would provide high standard engineering and technical knowledge education. The formal inauguration of the institution took place in the year 1959 and was presided over by the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, Professor Humayun Kabir.

IIT Madras was the former name of IIT Chennai. It was further changed to its current form when the city name became Madras to Chennai in the year 1996. As it was first established, IIT Madras has been working hard to become one of the core centers that provides unparalleled quality education.

Today, IIT Madras has also made a name for itself on the world-wide scenario. IIT Madras has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with several global institutions. The objective is to extend its global reach is to provide a platform for its students where they can work on co-operative projects and assignments alongside their global counterparts.

IIT Madras Admissions

Students who wish to apply for the B. Tech courses provided by the institute have to sit for the Joint Entrance Examination which is the common admission test for all IITs in the country. The joint entrance test is organised in the month of April every year.

Those students who wish to get admission for the postgraduate programs in engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy have to sit for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering i.e.. GATE. It is an all India level test.

Students who wants to apply for management programs in IIT Madras have to sit for the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET). JMET is a common exam that is organised for getting admission into the management courses of all IIT's and IISc.

But students also have to apply separately to each institute for admission. For admission to various different MSC postgraduate programs and 3 years post B. Sc programs, prospective students need to sit for the Joint Admission Test (JAM).
