The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is situated in Roorkee, a small city in the state of Uttranchal, India. The British established the college as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in the year 1847. The college was re-named the University of Roorkee in the year 1949. Over the past few years, the institution has attained fame and name of a leading educational institution because of its fine quality academia and also for its bright outstanding engineers.

The Government of India with the help of an ordinance issued on September 21 2001, declared the institution as the country's 7th Indian Institute of Technology.

The Institution is a frontrunner in higher technological education and provides tremendous opportunities in fundamental and applied research. The institution, since its inception has been a recognised institution in research and in providing technical manpower and know-how to the country. The institution offers Bachelor's degree courses in ten different subjects of engineering and postgraduate degrees in 55 different subjects of Engineering and Architecture. The institute has a number of departments and research centers providing different subjects of engineering as well as pure sciences.

Institute is a member of the LAOTSE, the international network of well reputed universities in Europe and Asia, which encompasses exchange of students as well as senior scholars.

A bill has been passed by the Indian Parliament on 21 September 2001, declaring the institute as the Institute of National Importance.

IIT Roorkee Admissions

Procedure of admission in case of undergraduate courses is generally done through an All-India entrance test also known as Joint Entrance Examination, organised by all the seven IITs in the country. IIT Roorkee has eleven courses under its B. Tech programme. The institute also provides five-year dual degree programmes wherein both B. Tech and M. Tech degrees are rewarded. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted at the all India level. Candidates who want to join the postgraduate programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and pharmacy need to pass this test. The Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) is organised for admission to the management programmes of all IITs and IISc. Also, the application has to be made separately for admission to each institute. The Joint Admission Test for MSc is a common entrance exam for admission to the various different postgraduate programmes and 3 years post B. SC programmes.
