PRAXIS II Music: Content Knowledge Exam
The exam is aimed for those individuals who wants to teach music in grades K − 12. Two hours will be provided, to complete 135 multiple choice questions i.e.that will consist of 75 minute non-listing section and 45 minute listening section. There will be 8 questions pertaining to professional practices, 43 questions pertaining to the learning of music for grade K − 12, 28 questions pertaining to performance, 28 questions pertaining to music theory and 28 questions pertaining to music literature and history.
- Professional Practices: This section will test your knowledge of professional ethics and practices, professional musical organizations, professional journals, literature, references and the philosophy of music education.
- The Learning of Music for grades K − 12: This section will test your knowledge of classroom management, musical classroom technology, selection of instrumental and vocal material for students, student evaluation, active, affective and psychomotor development, musical concepts and purposes of the musical curriculum.
- Performance: This section will test your knowledge of listening and performance errors, acoustics, rehearsal facilities, conducting, reading scores, synthesizers and electronic media, vocal production and musical instruments.
- Music Theory: This section will test your knowledge of melodies, rhymes, scales, cords, intervals, tempo, articulation, rhythm, harmony, scale, pitch, and compositional organization.
PRAXIS II Music: Concepts and Processes Exam
The exam will test your knowledge and understanding of music concepts and processes. One hour will be provided, to complete 2 short answer questions. Each question comprises of 50% of the final grade. There will be 1 question pertaining to planning the demonstration of a musical concept and 1 question pertaining to vocal and instrumental performance techniques. For the musical concept demonstration question, you will be asked to describe instructional methods you would use to teach a musical concept. You need to include the names of musical selections you would use to teach the musical concept you choose. For the question pertaining to vocal and instrumental performance techniques you will be asked to describe student performance techniques for a specific topic or remedial techniques for a specific performance issue. Question may be there based on coral or instrumental music.
PRAXIS II Music Analysis Exam
The exam will test your knowledge, understanding and ability to analyse music. One hour will be provided, to complete 3 short answer questions. There will be 1 question pertaining to the analysis of musical scores and 2 questions pertaining to performance errors. For the performance error questions you will be asked to identify incorrect articulation, incorrect vocal or instrumental accents and the incorrect interpretation of tempo with dynamic markings. The errors heard on these recordings will be easy to identify. There will be a coral ensemble and instrumental chamber ensemble, recording for the performance error questions. For the musical score on analysis question, you will be required to choose and answer one of the following: Firstly, Identify stylistic influences in the excerpt. Secondly, Describe and identify performance challenges or music concepts represented by the excerpts. Thirdly, choose a suitable ensemble type or grade level for each musical score you hear or describe a rehearsal techniques to help students enhance their performances or explain how the excerpts could be used in the teaching of musical concepts. You can write answer for this section with short phrases and descriptions, an essay type or long answer is not compulsory. This section comprises of 50% of your grade.
