Introduction

Indian Council of Historical Research Contingency Grants are awarded by the Indian Council of Historical Research, an autonomous organization established under the Societies Registration Act in 1972.

The primary aim of the Indian Council of Historical Research is to bring historians together and establish a forum for exchange of views between them by providing fellowships and financial assistance to young teachers in colleges, universities and registered research organizations as well as extending help to senior scholars who are in need of financial help for carrying out various different research activities.

A number of research projects are undertaken by the Indian Council of Historical Research every year to this effect. Indian Council of Historical Research Contingency Grants are awarded to an Indian citizen or to a foreign national to help him in pursuing research on History within India.

Indian Council of Historical Research Contingency Grants are awarded to an Indian citizen, or to a foreign national, to assist him in pursuing research on History within India. Candidates engaged in MPhil, PhD or post-doctoral work or carrying on independent research in History and who do not receive any travel or contingency grant for the proposed work from any other source may apply. For M. Phil Students, the Contingency Grant is available for a maximum sum of Rupees twenty thousand. For PHD Students, the Contingency Grant is available for a maximum sum of Rupees thirty thousand only. Grants more than the given amount can only be awarded by the Research Projects Committee, either upon advice of a consultant or upon recommendations of the Study Grants Committee.

Expenses Covered by Indian Council of Historical Research Contingency Grant

Indian Council of Historical Research Contingency Grants cover the expenses stated below:

  • Actual cost of rail or bus fare limited to first class/II AC fare from the place of ordinary residence of the scholar to the place of research and back.
  • Daily allowance for a maximum period of 90 days at the rates allowed by the institution of affiliation, if the recipient is employed there or Rupees one hundred and fifty, a day, if not employed.
  • A maximum sum of Rupees Five Hundred may be allowed per month up to a maximum period of 90 days for local conveyance of the scholar.
  • The total cost of books purchased out of Contingency Grant made under the provisions of shall not be more than the sum of Rupees two thousand.
  • An additional sum of rupees five hundred shall be paid to the recipient of the grant in excess of the sanctioned amount of grant, upon receipt of the said thesis, dissertation or monograph as a full payment for any expenses incurred in providing a copy thereof to the ICHR.

Such applications should normally be routed through the institutions where the candidate has registered for research. University as well as college teachers and members of staff of research institutions and others who indulged in research work in History can also apply for the Indian Council of Historical Research Contingency Grants.
