The TOEFL essay is graded on a scale of 1 to 6. Score of 1 implies the student is very weak in writing as well as forming a view-point in English. Score of 6 implies student possess outstanding English writing skills. However, an average student can score 3 to 4 in the TOEFL writing test.   • Read the statement very carefully and make sure you understand it. Always decide in advance, what you will be going to write in the exam. Prepare a list of your own core points.
  • It is easy to find out the introduction, development and conclusion. Each section should have atleast one separate paragraph.
  • Type or write in a clear and concrete language.
  • Focus on the entire question or statement, not just part of it.
  • Understand the rules of English punctuation well and use them carefully. Every new sentence must begin with a capital letter and end with a period, question mark or exclamation point.
  • Write short, simple complete sentences. This style is considered as strong in English.
  • Do not initiate your sentence with the conjunctions i.e.. And, or, but, or, with, because:
  • Be assure that each sentence has an identifiable main subject and main verb and that they agree in number and tense.
  • Use varied sentence structures; atleast one question, passive voice sentence, conditional sentence, complex sentence etc.
  • Your examples and reasons to support any idea should be particular and not generalized. Examples, incidents from your own personal life are the best. As no one is going to check whether these examples are true or not.
