National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur was initiated as a result of amalgamation contract between the Government of India and Government of Bihar regarding its set up. It was incepted in 1960 as a Regional Institute of Technology. However now it functions under the guidance of Human Resource Development Ministry since 2003. NIT was conferred the status of a Deemed University on December 2002. Presently, the institute consists of 115 teachers, 1350 students and 300 staff members.

Admission Procedure at National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur

  • Admission for B. Tech Course: For this course, a total of 280 seats are available from which 50% (140 seats) seats are reserved for the state candidates in which the institute is located and rest 50% (140 seats) are meant for candidates from other states. This decision is taken by MHRD, Government of India. Out of 140 seats which are alloted for state candidature, 105 seats are for students from Bihar and rest 35 seats are for Jharkhand students. This ratio was decided in a treaty made between the two states which was based on the principles laid by of Government of India, New Delhi.
  • The 105 seats and 35 seats allotted to students of Bihar and Jharkhand respectively are filled on the basis of ranks obtained by students in the AIEEE entrance examination.
  • A few seats are reserved for the students of foreign nations.
  • Post Graduate Course: For admission to M. Tech. GATE scores are considered. Also a screening test is conducted which is included as merit to grant admission. This is followed by an interview which is conducted by the Institute itself.
  • Students are admitted to the MCA program on the basis of their AIMCET scores and scores obtained in a screening test followed by interview conducted by the Institute.
  • Phd course: Overall academic results is given 70% weightage while 30% weightage is of tests and interviews conducted by the institute.
