Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

The dream project of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhaba came true later in the year 1945 when The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) came into being at Peddar Road, Bombay. However it was finally placed at Navy Nagar Campus in 1962, after shifting its base to Royal Yatch Club, Apollo Bunder from the initial campus at Bombay.

Beginning from the scratch, the institute began research in the areas of Cosmic rays, high energy Physics, theoretical Physics and Mathematics which were followed by incorporation of more areas of research as Nuclear Physics, condensed matter physics, Computer science, geophysics, molecular biology, radio astronomy. The pace of progress of institute in various areas of research was steady. TIFR also became a part of the Atomic Energy Commission by helping them to arrange Electronics groups for Atomic Energy work.

The credit of designing India's first computer (TIFRAC) goes to TIFR. The institute also deals with subjects of contemporary interest like semiconductor technology and software technology. The institute was conferred the status of a “Deemed University” in 1992.

The schools of study and other academic programs are

  • School of Mathematics: This institute is the pioneer as research institute in Mathematics at international level from India. It started its journey under the guidance of K Chandrasekharan and K. G Ramanathan in the 1950's. The institute holds two campuses of research, one at Mumbai and the other at Bangalore. The members at Mumbai campus carry on research in Pure mathematics, while on the other hand research in Applied maths is carried out by members at Bangalore campus. The current areas of research include Algebra, Alebraic Geometry, Combinatorial Mathemtics, Differential Equations, Lie Theory, Number Theory, so on and so forth.

  • School of Technology and computer Science: This institute was initiated with a major objective to maintain and upgrade the Indian research to international standards in the fields of Technology and Computer Science which would ultimately lead to improvisation in the standard of living of the people of nation. Present areas of research are algorithmics, computational maths, logics of programs, speech and signal processing, robot motion planning, etc To attain the objective, TIFR a programme which starts with a Graduate program and leads to attaining a PhD degree in the same. MSc degrees are also offered in some subjects. An integrated MSc/PhD program is also offered. The whole process of completing the PhD course usually requires about 5 years.

These programs are conducted at the Mumbai center and various National centers under TIFR.
