21 institutes were blacklisted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and tagged as ‘Fake Universities’ after due verification. UGC announced that “such self-styled, unrecognized Universities which are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act has been declared as fake and not entitled to confer any degrees. ”

If any Institute wants to become University and fits into a defined in to predefined criteria as given by UGC.

UGC defines a “University as established by a Central/State/Provincial Act or an ‘institution Deemed to be University’ under section 3 or an institution especially authorized by an Act of Parliament to confer UGC specified degrees under section 22 (3) of the Act”.
