## Calculator Policy for Biology

A calculator (with square root) with four functions is allowed in both the multiple-choice and free-response sections of the AP Biology Exam as in the exam both the sections require data interpretation and manipulation. Calculators like scientific and graphing calculators, are not permitted in the exam. Four-function calculators have a one line display and a simple layout of numeric keys (e. g. 0 − 9), arithmetic operation keys (e. g. +, × and ÷ ), and a limited number of special-use keys (e. g. %, +/-, C, and AC). Four-function calculator includes Simple memory buttons like MC, M +, M-, and MR. Scientific calculators are more complicated, multi-row layout and have various special-use keys, including ones for trigonometric and logarithmic functions such as SIN, COS, TAN, TRIG, LOG, and LN. Four-function calculators do not include trigonometric and logarithmic functions, statistical capabilities, or graphing capabilities, all these are present in scientific calculator. Students can bring two four-function calculator to the exam.

## Calculator Policy for Calculus AB and Calculus BC

In this exam Graphing calcultor is the key requirement. Committee that held the exams is based on the assumption that all students are aware with four basic calculator capabilities used in calculus. A graphing calculator has the in built capabilities to:

- Plotting of the graph of a function within an arbitrary viewing window
- Find the zeros of functions (solve equations numerically)
- Numerically derivation of a function
- Numerically calculation of the value of a definite integral

These above capabilities provide the sufficient computational tools for the solution in the exam question that requires the use of a calculator. However atmost care is taken to ensure and assure that the exam do not favor those students who use graphing calculators with more extensive built-in features.

### Technology Restrictions on the Exams

You are not allowed to use these items in the AP Calculus Exams: Nongraphing scientific calculators, portable and handheld computers, laptops, electronic writing pads, pocket organizers.

As well as, you are not allowed to use graphing calculator models with these features or capabilities: QWERTY (typewriter-like) keypad as part of hardware or software (e. g. TI-92 Plus, Voyage 200); pen-input, stylus or touch-screen (e. g. PalmPilot, personal digital assistant, Casio ClassPad); wireless or Bluetooth capabilities; paper tapes; talk or make noise; need electrical outlet; have cell phone, audio, or video recording capability; can access the Internet; or camera or scanning capability. The use of hardware peripherals with an approved calculator is also prohibited.

Proctors will be there to check calculators before the exam. Therefore, it is very desirable for each and every student to have an approved calculator. Familiarity with the operation of the calculators among the students is very important. Students are not allowed to share their calculators, and communication between calculators is prohibited during the exam. Students may bring to the exam one or two (but no more than two) graphing calculators from the current List of Graphing Calculators.

Memories of calculator will not be cleared. Students are allowed to bring to the exam calculators containing whatever programs they want.

Students are not allowed to use calculator memories to take test materials out of the room. Students that attempt to remove test materials from the room by any method will have their exam grades invalidated.

## Calculator Policy for Chemistry

Calculators are not permitted on MCQs of the AP Chemistry Exam.

With the rapid expansion of scientific calculators'capabilities, which are now included not only in programming and graphing functions but also stored equations and other data. For the section of the exam in which calculators are permitted, students should use the calculators with which they are familiar, with as few limitations as possible. Nevertheless, they should not have access to information in their calculators that is not available to other students, if that information is needed to answer the questions.

In the free-response section calculators are allowed for the first 55 minutes. In this time, students will work on three required problems. For the last 40 minutes, calculators must not be used as students work on the remaining free-response questions.

For the first 55 minutes, any programmable or graphing calculator may be used, with a few exceptions, and students are not required to erase their calculator memories before and after the exam. Although most calculators are permitted on the free-response section, students may not share their calculators and those with typewriter-style (qwerty) keyboards will not be permitted in the exam.

The free-response section focuses on solving in-depth problems and writing essays where knowledge and skills of which principles to apply and how to apply them is the most important aspect of the solution to these problems.

## Calculator policy for Physics B and C

Calculators are not allowed in the multiple-choice section of the AP Physics Exams.

The purpose of the multiple-choice section is to access the students with knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and concepts of physics. The multiple-choice questions focuses on the conceptual understanding and qualitative applications. Many physical definitions and principles are quantitative in nature and can therefore be expressed as equations. The knowledge of these basic definitions and principles, expressed as equations, is a part of the content of physics that should be learned by physics students and will continue to be assessed in the multiple-choice sections. However, any numeric calculations using these equations required in the multiple-choice sections will be kept simple. In some of the questions the answer choices differ by orders of magnitude so that the questions can be answered by estimation. Students should be encouraged to develop their skills not only in estimating answers but also in recognizing answers that are unreasonable or unlikely.

In the free-response section of the AP Physics Exams caculators are allowed to use.

Calculators acceptable for AP Calculus are acceptable for AP Physics. Also, non-graphing scientific calculators without typewriter-style (QWERTY) keyboards can also be used in the AP Physics Exams (see the Calculator Policy section for either Calculus AB or Calculus BC). Students are not allowed to erase their calculator memories before and after the examination. Students are not allowed to share their calculators.

The free-response sections focuses on solving hard problems where knowledge of which principles to apply and how to apply them is the most important aspect of the solution to these problems. Regardless of the type of calculator allowed, the examinations have been and will continue to be designed and graded to minimize the necessity of doing lengthy calculations. Except for some fundamental constants, most numerical values are selected so that calculations with them are easy and quick. When free-response problems involve calculations, most of the points awarded to solve and are given for setting up the solution correctly rather than for actually carrying out the computation.

## Calculator Policy for Statistics

Each student is expected to bring a graphing calculator with statistical capabilities. The capabilities must include standard statistical univariate and bivariate summaries, through linear regression. The graphical capabilities include common univariate and bivariate displays such as histograms, boxplots, and scatterplots.

You are allowed to bring two calculators in the exam.

The memory of the calculator will not be cleared but you may only use the memory to store programs, not notes.

You're not allowed to access any information in your graphing calculators or elsewhere if it's not directly related to upgrading the statistical functionality of older graphing calculators to make them comparable to statistical features found on newer models. The only acceptable upgrades can improve the computational functionalities and/or graphical functionalities for data that key into the calculator in exam. Unacceptable enhancements include, keying or scanning text or response templates into the calculator.

While giving the exam, you can not use minicomputers, pocket organizers, electronic writing pads, or calculators with QWERTY (i.e.. typewriter) keyboards.

The calculators allowed for AP Calculus which are quoted above can also be used in the AP Statistics Exam.
