Oil Palm: Crude & Kernel, Mini Mission, Oilseeds - National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil Palm (NMOOP)

  • Oilpalm crop is one of the highest oils (palm oil) yielding crops among the all-perennial crops. Oil palm tree produces edible palm-oil as well as palm kernel-oil. This oil palm is considered as golden palm due to its high yielding capacity. Oil palm produces 4 to 5 tonnes per ha of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) and 0.40 to 0.50 tonne per ha of Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) from 4th to 30th year of its productive life span.
  • Oil palm crop provides the excellent substitute of importing the oil. In India, oil palm is being cultivated in 13 states by covering about 3,15, 000 hectares by 2017 - 18 under irrigated conditions. Potential states are Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Bihar

Oilseeds

  • India is one of the major oilseed՚s grower and importer of edible oils. India՚s vegetable oil economy is world՚s fourth largest after USA, China & Brazil. The oilseed accounts for 13% of the Gross Cropped Area, 3% of the Gross National Product and 10% value of all agricultural commodities. This sector has recorded annual growth rate of area, production and yield@2.44% , 5.47% and 2.96% respectively during last decade (1999 - 2009) .
  • The diverse agro-ecological conditions in the country are favourable for growing 9 annual oilseed crops, which include 7 edible oilseeds (groundnut, rapeseed & mustard, soybean, sunflower, sesame, safflower and Niger) and two non-edible oilseeds (castor and linseed) . Oilseed՚s cultivation is undertaken across the country in about 27 million hectares mainly on marginal lands, of which 72% is confined to rainfed farming.
  • A substantial portion of our requirement of edible oil is met through import of palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia.
  • It is, therefore, necessary to exploit domestic resources to maximize production to ensure edible oil security for the country. Oil Palm is comparatively a new crop in India and is the highest vegetable oil yielding perennial crop. With quality planting materials, irrigation and proper management, there is potential of achieving 20 - 30 MT Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFBs) per ha after attaining the age of 5 years.
  • Tree Borne Oilseeds (TBOs) , like sal, mahua, simarouba, kokum, olive, karanja, jatropha, neem, jojoba, cheura, wild apricot, walnut, tung etc. are cultivated/grown in the country under different agro-climatic conditions in a scattered form in forest and non-forest areas as well as in waste land/deserts/hilly areas. These TBOs are also good source of vegetable oil and therefore need to be supported for cultivation.

  • Production inputs component covering drip-irrigation, bore-well/water harvesting structure, diesel-pump set, vermi-compost unit, establishment of new seed garden, machinery & tools, special component for NE/hilly states/LW Areas for construction of roads and establishment of new oil palm processing unit.
  • Transfer of technologies component covering assistance for training of farmers/officers՚ demonstrations on oil palm at farmer՚s field, need based R&D projects on oil palm including import of germplasm and training infrastructure support to ICAR/SAUs, local initiatives/publicity/contingency including monitoring & evaluation and operational costs including Consultant services etc. , exposure visits of farmers/officers to oil palm fields/seminar/conference etc.

Bring additional 1.05 lakh hectare area under oil palm cultivation through area expansion approach in the country during next two years i.e.. , 2017 - 18 and 2019 - 20. The total area in the country will be 4.20 lakh ha by the end of March 2020.
