123 Deemed to Be Universities Cannot Use ‘University’ in Name [ CBSE NET-JRF Updates ]

University Grant Commission (UGC) ordered as many as 123 deemed-to-be universities to drop using the word ‘university’ in their name. These institutes cannot mention word University but can use Deemed to be University within parenthesis.

  • Supreme Court says that the use of word ‘University’ by Deemed-to-be universities is in violation of the Section 23 of the UGC Act.
  • Failure will invite necessary action against the deemed to be university as per the UGC Regulations, 2016.
  • SC said that no deemed-to-be-university can run open and distant learning courses from (2018 - 19) without permitted by the concerned authorities.
  • Also, court directed UGC to take proper steps to implement the Section 23 of the UGC Act, 1956.
  • Section 23 of the UGC Act, 1956 says,
    1. “No institution, whether a corporate body or not, other than a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Ac [a Provincial Act or a State Act shall be entitled to have the word “University” associated with its name in any manner whatsoever. ”
    • This decision affects institutions such as:
    1. Manav Rachna University and Lingaya’s University in Haryana
    2. Christ’s University and Jain University in Bengaluru
    3. Symbiosis International University in Pune
    • Other institutions that received the UGC letter are:
    1. Delhi-based Indian Agricultural Research Institute (Pusa)
    2. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade
    3. Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences and Jamia Hamdard
    4. National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal
    5. Forest Research Institute, Dehradun
    6. BIT Mesra (Ranchi)
    7. Christ University, Bengaluru
    8. Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
    9. Symbiosis International University, Pune
    10. BITS Pilani among others
    • These institutions will have to remove the word ‘university’ from their names.
