Directions: Read the following table carefully, based on it answer questions 7 to 11.

Table depicted Net irrigated area from 1997 - 98 to 2005 - 06

7. Find out the source of irrigation that has registered maximum improvement in terms of percentage of net irrigated area during 2002 - 03 to 2003 - 04

a) Government Canals

b) Tanks

c) Tubewells and other wells

d) Other Sources

Answer: d

Explanation: Percent increase in government canals is (14444 - 13863) ⟋13863 × 100 = 4.02%

Similarly for tanks it is (1908 - 1802) ⟋1908 × 100 = 5.55%

For other sources it is (4281 - 3657) ⟋ 4281 × 100 = 14.5%

For tubewells and other wells it is (35779 - 34250) ⟋34785 × 100 = 4.27%

8. In which of the following years, net irrigation by tanks increased at highest rate?

a) 1998 - 99

b) 2000 - 01

c) 2003 - 04

d) 2005 - 06

Answer: d

For year 2005 - 06 it is (2034 - 1727) ⟋1727 × 100 = 17.77% and this shows the highest increase. .

For year 2000 - 01 it is (2449 - 2535) ⟋2535 × 100, but this is negative that means a decline

For year 2003 - 04 it is (1908 - 1802) ⟋1908 × 100 = 5.55%

For year 1998 - 99 it is (2792 - 2593) ⟋2792 × 100 = 7.1%

9. Identify the source of irrigation that has registered maximum negative growth in terms of net irrigated area during the years given in the table.

a) government canals

b) private canals

c) tubewells and other canals

d) other sources

Answer: a

Explanation: Tubewells have shown increasing trend, other sources and private canals are fluctuating so the maximum negative decrease is that if government canals.

10. In which of the following years share of tubewells and other wells in the total net irrigated area was the highest?

a) 1998 - 99

b) 2000 - 01

c) 2002 - 03

d) 2004 - 05

Answer: c

Explanation: Since we are talking about share of tubewells and other wells,

In 1998 - 99 it is 32090⟋55173 × 100 = 58.1%

In 2000 - 01 it is 33796⟋55076 × 100 = 61.3%

In 2002 - 03 it is 34250⟋53778 × 100 = 63.68% and this is the highest increase

In 2004 - 05 it is 34785⟋58867 × 100 = 59.09%

11. What is the source of irrigation that has registered highest percentage of decline in net area under irrigation during 1997 - 98 and 2005 - 06?

a) Government canals

b) Private canals

c) Tanks

d) Other sources

Answer: c

Explanation: decline in governmental canals is (15268 - 17117) ⟋17117 × 100 = 10.80%

Private canals is (207 - 211) ⟋211 × 100 =-1.8% i.e.. , decline of 1.8%

Decline in tanks is (2034 - 2593) ⟋2593 × 100 =-21.5% , hence maximum decline is in case of tanks.

Other sources = (7314 - 3102) ⟋3102 × 100 and since answer would be positive, there is increase and not decline, so this cannot be the answer.
