Global IT Challenge for Youth w/Disabilities (GITC) 2018 held in New Delhi from 9th to 11th Nov. , 2018. It was co-hosted by Dept. of Empowerment of Persons w/Disabilities (DEPwD) Ministry of Social Justice

Key Facts of Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities 2018

  • GITC is being held every year in Asia- Pacific region & such events were held in past in countries like South Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam etc.

  • Objective of GICT was to leverage IT skills among youth w/disabilities & to spread awareness abt application of Information & Computer Technology in enhancing quality of life of persons w/disabilities.

  • Around 100 youth w/disabilities (visual disability, hearing disability, locomotor disability & intellectual disability/developmental disorder) from 18 countries participated. Among them 12 were Indian.

  • Event saw participation around 300 participants including 120 Youth w/disabilities from 24 Asia Pacific countries.

  • It had IT Forum in which countries will present their work & achievement in ensuring accessibility to persons w/disabilities in IT sector.

  • 55 Awards Presented to Youth w/Disabilities at ‘Global it Challenge for Youth with Disabilities 2018’

  • Individual competition on e-tool & e-life mapping was held on 9th Nov. , 2018 & group competition event was completed on 10th Nov. , 2018.

  • Another event called ‘IT Forum’ was organised to showcase best practices followed by other countries for enhancing empowerment of persons w/disabilities.

Background of Global It Challenge for Youth with Disabilities 2018

  • These youth w/disabilities had been selected on basis of National IT Challenge conducted by Ministry thru NIT, Kurukshetra in June, 2018.

  • India has been participating in annual event since 2013.

  • Last year in 2017, event was held in Vietnam.
