About CV Raman

  • Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born on November 7th, 1888 at Thiruvanaikaval in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu and died on 21st November 1970 in Bangalore.
  • Passed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science examination from University of Madras.
  • Discovered the Raman Scattering: When light traverses transparent material, some of the deflected light changes wavelength.
  • Raman scattering makes the sea and clear sky look blue.

Awards and Honors

  • First receiver of the Bharat Ratna along with politician C. Rajagopalachari, and philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
  • Every year National Science Day is observed in India in February to mark the discovery of Raman Effect.
