Japan-India Coordination Forum (JICF) for Development of North-Eastern Region in its first meeting at Delhi identified priority areas of cooperation- connectivity and road network development (especially inter-state roads & major district roads) , disaster management, food processing, organic farming, and tourism.

What is Japan-India Coordination Forum?

  • Development of northeast - key to promote its Act East Policy.
  • Japan places a special emphasis on northeast for its geographical importance connecting India to Southeast Asia and historical ties.
  • Japan՚s involvement in Northeast strategically undermines China՚s designs in the region. It comes in the backdrop of Chinese troops making incursions into Indian Territory.
  • Japan already cooperating on a variety of development projects in the northeast- connectivity infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply, sewage, forest resource management, and biodiversity.
  • Japan believes in potential of people-to-people and cultural exchanges between Japan and the northeast due to Japan՚s historical connection with the region
  • Coordination Forum would explore and expand cooperation in the Northeastern Region strengthening the relationship between Japan and North East and between Japan and India.
  • Earlier in April 2017, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed an agreement with India to provide over 67 billion yen ($ 610 million) for Phase I of the North East Road Network Connectivity Improvement Project- National Highway 54 and National Highway 51 in Mizoram and Meghalaya.
