Union Ministry of AYUSH held the main event of 4th International Yoga Day celebrations (IDY-2018) on 21st June 2018 at Dehradun, U’Khand. 1st International Yoga Day (IYD) was celebrated across world on 21st June 2015.

Key Details on 2018 Yoga Day Celebrations (PM Yoga Award)

  • Event is going to be Mass Yoga Demonstration that will attended by PM.
  • 3 places- Forest Research Institute (FRI), Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) & Maharana Pratap Stadium are identified for event.
  • On 7th June 2018, there will be Curtain raiser to main event at Dehradun.
  • On this occasion AYUSH Ministry is planning to give 2 Yoga Awards known as PM Yoga Award to national & international participants.

Events on Yoga Day

  • Online competitions on jingle-composing, poster-making & yoga-quiz.
  • Competitions on Facebook like “IDY Challenge” & more such activities on newly re-vamped & interactive International Day of Yoga (IDY) Portal.
  • Activities like Yoga Training in all districts, setting up of Yoga Parks & State Level Yoga Fests.
  • Ministry is developing Yoga Protocol for women in age group of 40 plus in consultation w/Indian Menopause Society (IMS).

How Was International Day of Yoga (IDY) Adopted

  • Idea of celebrating International Yoga Day was pitched by PM at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2014.

  • Later in December 2014, UNGA unanimously adopted India-led resolution to observe 21st June as ‘International Day of Yoga’.

  • This resolution was adopted under agenda of UN’s ‘Global Health & Foreign Policy’.

  • 21st June was selected because it represents one of two solstices & is longest day in Northern Hemisphere which has special significance in many parts of world.
