- The Union cabinet approved the creation of 22nd law commission.
- The term of 21st law commission ended in August, 2019.
- The new panel will have a term of three years and it will be notified by the law ministry.
- The law commission advises the government on complex legal issues.
Overview
- The panel will have:
- A full time chairperson
- Four full time members (including a member secretary)
- Law and legislative secretaries in law ministry as ex-officio members
- Not more than five part time members
- Usually, the commission is presided by a retired Supreme Court judge or chief justice of High court.
- The law commission was originally constituted in 1955 and it is reconstituted every three years.
- 277 reports have been submitted so far by various law commissions.
- The 21st law commission was headed by Justice BS Chauhan and submitted reports on Simultaneous polls to Lok Sabha and state assemblies and Uniform Civil Code.
- The panel report supported simultaneous elections, but as per the panel the time was not right for implementing Uniform Civil Code.
- Law Commission of India is neither constitutional nor a statutory body.
- It is an advisory body to Ministry of law and Justice and works for legal reforms.
- The recommendations of the commission are not binding on the government. They may be accepted or rejected.
