The first Monday of October is World Habitat Day (WHD) that is 3rd October 2016. This day celebrates urbanization as the most transformative trend of 21st century. World Habitat day reflects on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter.

Theme for 2016

  • Housing at the Centre” was the theme for 2016.
  • Raise awareness about requirement of affordable housing in all urban areas, cities, and towns.
  • Recognize access to adequate housing a global challenge with fast growing urbanization.
  • Around one quarter of the world’s urban population continues to live in informal settlements and slums.
  • An increasing number of urban dwellers, particularly the poor and weak groups are living in precarious conditions.

About World Habitat Day

  • Founded by the United Nations in 1986.
  • Remind the world of its collective duty for the habitat of future generations.
  • Encourage habitat development United Nations Human Settlements Programme - Habitat scroll of Honours from 1989 - award is honored for notable involvement in the field sustainable and affordable human habitats.
  • Through the work of Habitat, 6.8 million people from low - income families have found affordable housing. Religious groups, community groups and others have successfully helped tackle a significant social problem - decent housing for all.
