Ministry of Culture has 4 important Missions namely, National Mission on Monuments & Antiquities (NMMA), National Mission on Manuscripts, National Mission on Libraries & Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission. Details are given below.

Objectives of NMMA

  • Documentation and creation of suitable database on built heritage and sites for information and dissemination to planners, researchers etc. and for better management of such cultural resources.

  • Documentation of all Antiquities in the form of registered antiquities, catalogued antiquities with central as well as state governments, private museums and collections, universities, etc. in a uniform format

  • Promote awareness and sensitize people on benefits of preserving the historical and cultural aspects of built heritage, sites, and antiquities.

  • Provide training facility and capacity building to the concerned state departments, local bodies, NGOs, universities, museums, local communities etc.

  • Develop synergy between institutions like Archaeological Survey of India, State Departments, and NGOs.

National Mission on Manuscripts (NMM)

  • National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) was established in 2003 for five years subsequently extended twice.

  • Mandates identifying, documenting, conserving, and making accessible manuscript heritage of India.

  • Reclaim the inheritance in manuscripts, often in a poor state of preservation.

  • It works through a network of 100 centers and 350 sub-centers.

Importance of NMM

  • India is the largest repository of manuscripts in the world and forerunner in conservation efforts.

  • National Mission for Manuscripts is first national level comprehensive initiative in the world aimed to conserve manuscripts and disseminate their knowledge.

National Mission on Libraries

  • National Mission on Libraries (NML) aims to use public libraries to make India a knowledge-based society by revamping the Public Library System & Services, and providing digital content based services.

  • Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation is nodal agency for administrative, logistic, planning and budgeting purposes.

  • The Scheme has the following four components:

    • Creation of National Virtual Library (NVLI),

    • Setting up of NML Model Libraries,

    • Quantitative & Qualitative Survey,

    • Capacity Building for library professionals.

Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission

  • Government of India constituted a Gandhi Heritage Sites (GHS) Panel in April, 2006.

  • Based on the recommendation the “Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission” with a fixed term of 5 years was created in 2013.

  • Mandates to preserve the identified sites and supervise, guide and assist in conservation initiatives, maintenance or preservation initiatives and the creation of a database of tangible, literary, and visual heritage associated with Gandhi.
