Every year 5th June is observed as World Environment Day (WED) to lift up worldwide global awareness to protect environment and over planet Earth, this is the largest celebration of the year related to environment.

  • United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the organisation body which mark celebration of World Environment Day global every year.
  • Connecting People to Nature is the theme of 2017.
  • According to UN the theme “implores us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share. ”
  • Canada is the host country of 2017
  • Canada will showcase its natural environment beauty of land and water as being host country World Environment Day.

About World Environment Day (WED):

  • In 1972 WED was recognized by the United Nations General Assembly to mark the opening of United Nations Conference on the Human Environment 1972 which was held in Stockholm.
  • In 1973 the first World Environment Day was observed and from that time it is being held every year with different themes.
  • From 1987 the World Environment Day has been hosted by different countries.
  • Recently the WED is hosted by Angola, Italy, Barbados, Brazil, Norway and the United States.

About United Nations Environment Programme:

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is a part of United Nations and coordinates its environmental activities, supporting developing countries in performing environmentally sound policies and practices.
  • Maurice Strong has founded it and he was the first director of it, based on the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm Conference) in June 1972.
  • Its headquarters is located in the Gigiri neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya. UNEP also has six regional offices and various country offices.
