World Tsunami Awareness Day was observed on 5th November. Its first edition was held this year- in 2016. Day is celebrated to spread awareness about Tsunami. 2016 Theme is “Effective Education and Evacuation Drills”.

Importance of the Day

  • Stress on the significance of quick warning systems to mitigate damage.
  • Spread awareness about dangers of tsunami.
  • Objective is to improve knowledge of tsunamis and elicit appropriate response by the different agencies and citizens.

Key Details

  • Tsunamis are large waves that come on the coasts because of seafloor movement associated with earthquakes or landslides.
  • Difficult to predict though seismically active regions are more at risk.
  • In December 2015, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) dedicated a World Tsunami Awareness Day.
  • This day relates with the annual anniversary of the 1854 Inamura-no-hi (Fire of Inamura) event.
  • First proposal was suggested by Japan after the 3rd united nation Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. This conference was held in Sendai (Japan) in March 2015.
