The Slum Yuva Daud of the Adopt Slum Campaign initiated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan involves groups like NSS, public schools, RWAs, NGOs and clubs etc. A total 11 Slum Yuva Runs have been planned of which 5 have happened.

Slums in India

According to Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, National Buildings Organisation:

  • “Slum describe informal settlements within cities
  • Inadequate housing and living conditions.
  • The only type of settlement affordable and accessible to the poor
  • Caused by non-inclusive urbanization catalyzed by increasing rural migration to urban areas.
  • Under Section-3 of the Slum Area Improvement and Clearance Act, 1956, slums have been defined as mainly those residential areas where dwellings are in any respect unfit for human habitation by reasons of dilapidation, overcrowding, faulty arrangements and designs of such buildings, narrowness or faulty arrangement of streets, lack of ventilation, light, sanitation facilities or any combination of these factors which are detrimental to safety, health and morals
  • Per UN Habitat a slum is characterized by lack of durable housing, insufficient living area, lack of access to clean water, inadequate sanitation, and insecure tenure

Slum Population in India

Slum population in India has increased during 2001 - 11

For the first time in Census 2001, slum were earmarked across the country

Recognized slums- Areas recognised by State, Union territories Administration or Local Government, Housing and Slum Boards, which may have not been formally notified as slum under any act

Identified slums- compact area of at least 300 population or about 60 - 70 households of poorly built congested tenements, in unhygienic environment usually with inadequate infrastructure and lacking in proper sanitary and drinking water facilities. Such areas should be identified personally by the Charge Officer and inspected by Directorate of Census Operations.
