Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, Environment & Forests & Climate Change inaugurated newly constructed International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) Complex in INCOIS campus at Hyderabad, Telangana.

International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography

  • ITCOocean is dedicated to Former PM Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee & named academic building as Atal Bhavan & Guest House as Atal Atithi Griha.

  • This UNESCO category 2 centres was established by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), GoI earlier in 2013.

  • It provides training to scientists/researchers/government officers/disaster managers/decision makers, etc.

  • It upgraded to assist UNESCO & its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

  • It will help in providing capacity building & training activities in operational oceanography.

  • It will benefit South Asian & African states bordering Indian Ocean & small island nations in Pacific from INCOIS’ ocean science & mgmt. practices.

Background of ITCOocean

  • General Conference of UNESCO approved offer of GoI to establish ITCOocean as UNESCO Category 2 Centre in November 2017.

  • Under aegis of Regional Integrated Multi-hazard Early warning System for Africa & Asia (RIMES), INCOIS is providing ocean state forecast & other related warnings to 5 countries (Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles, Madagascar & Cameroon).
