AYUSH traditional Medicine System of India consists of Ayurveda, yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy and these medicine systems are being practiced in India since ages. Ayurvedic system includes physical, psychological, spiritual and social. Indian government wants to integrate its traditional system with the modern medicine on equal terms. This would be the only solution to address the subservient status of AYUSH and to foster its legitimate inclusion into main stream healthcare. China has been able to integrate its traditional system with the modern medicine because of China Government started it early in 1960s.

Advantages of AYUSH System

  • AYUSH system has high social acceptability because of its traditional nature and because of lower Side Effects.

  • AYUSH systems are relatively cheaper.

  • AYUSH can provide best care to elderly.

  • The problems of tobacco and drug abuse can be tackled by AYUSH especially through Yoga.

Challenges with AYUSH System

  • Lack of research Institutions which leads to lack of proper scientific research.

  • Scientific validation of basics concept is missing.

  • Surgical procedures are minimal focus on cosmeticisation and commercialization.

  • Indian government wants to integrate its traditional system with the modern medicine but due to lack of proper scientific research in the traditional system modern medical practitioners are not ready to integrate with the traditional system.

Government Initiatives on AYUSH System

  • Government of India is taking various steps to make the AYUSH system more authentic.

  • They have created the ministry of AYUSH; it has been launched to promote traditional medicines and making these medicines affordable.

  • Government creating AYUSH wings at defense and Railway hospitals.

  • Providing soft loans and subsidies for the establishment of private AYUSH hospitals and clinics and building institutes of excellence in teaching and Research.

  • AYUSH and it also creates 12,500 dedicated AYUSH health and Wellness centers are planned under the Ayushman Bharat mission.

  • Also there is need for standardization of regulations of the AYUSH practices and practitioners.

Ministry of AYUSH

  • The Ministry of AYUSH was formed on 9th November 2014 to ensure the optimal development and propagation of AYUSH system of Healthcare.

  • Earlier it was known as the department of Indian system of medicine and Homeopathy created in 1995 and renamed as Department of Ayurveda, yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha Homeopathy (AYUSH) in November 2003.

  • It works on development of education and research in Ayurveda, yoga, naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy.
