Former world junior champion and Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta who won the 19th Commonwealth Chess Championship at Mumbai, Maharashtra. Abhijeet Gupta won the gold medal after settling for a quick draw with his opponent Arghyadip Das in the ninth and final round played at Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Arghyadip Das came second winning the silver medal while M R Lalith Babu won the bronze medal (third position) in men’s section.

Padmini Rout won the gold medal in the women’s section while S Vijayalakshmi and S Meenakshi won silver and bronze medal respectively in this championship. Both Vijayalakshmi and Meenakshi had won the last six games.

Abhijeet Gupta was born on 16 October 1989. Abhijeet Gupta won the World Junior Chess Championship at Gaziantep, Turkey on 15 August 2008.

Abhijeet Gupta the third Indian to win this prestigious championship, which carries with it the FIDE Grandmaster title.
