Ram Nath Kovind born on 1st October 1945 is a lawyer and now the President of India. He is the 2nd Dalit leader to be elected to the post. Earlier served as the 35th Governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017 and as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006.

  • Nominated as a presidential candidate by the ruling NDA coalition and won the 2017 presidential election.
  • Assumed office on July 25th, 2017.
  • Lawyer for 16 years and practiced in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court until 1993
  • Born in Paraukh village in the Kanpur Dehat district, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Belongs to landless Kori weaving community
  • Had to walk each day to Khanpur village, 8 km away, to attend junior school, as nobody in the village had a bicycle.
  • Holds Bachelor’s degree in commerce and a LLB from DAV College
  • Kovind went to Delhi to prepare for the civil services examination- passed exam on his third attempt
  • Did not join services and started practicing law.
  • Between 1977 & 1978 served as personal assistant of Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai.
  • In 1978 became advocate-on-record of the Supreme Court and served as a Central Government standing counsel in SC from 1980 to 1993
  • Provided free legal aid to weaker sections of society, women and the poor under the Free Legal Aid Society in New Delhi
  • Elected as Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh in April 1994- served twelve years
  • Served Parliamentary Committee for Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes, Home Affairs, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Social Justice and Empowerment, Law and Justice
  • Focused on education in rural areas - construction of school buildings.
  • On 8 August 2015, the President of India appointed Kovind as Governor of Bihar.
  • Kovind’s as Governor constituted judicial commission to investigate irregularities in promotion of undeserving teachers, mismanagement of funds and appointment of undeserving candidates in universities.
  • In presidential elections 2017, he received 65.6 % of the valid votes, against former Speaker of the Lok Sabha- Meira Kumar. He received 2, 930 votes amounting to Electoral College votes of 7, 02, 044 (65.65%)
  • He became 2nd Dalit representative to become President after K. R. Narayanan
