India successfully test-fired indigenously developed nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-5 from Integrated Test Range on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, previously known as Wheeler Island on 3rdJune, 2018.

  • Long-range surface-to-surface missile w/strike range of 5, 000 km was fired from mobile launcher off Odisha coast.
  • All radars, electro-optical tracking stations & telemetry stations tracked vehicle all thru course of trajectory.

Significance of Agni-5 Missile 6th Trial

  • This was sixth trial of state-of-the-art missile Agni-5, which covered its full distance during test.

  • Several new technologies were successfully tested during Agni-5 trial.

  • Navigation systems- very-high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro-based Inertial Navigation System & modern & highly-accurate Micro Navigation System ensured that missile reached within few metres of target.

  • Missile comprised high-speed on-board computer & fault tolerant software along w/robust & reliable bus, which were able to guide it flawlessly.

  • Unlike other missiles of series, Agni-5 is most advanced in terms of navigation & guidance, warhead & engine.

  • Agni-V is intercontinental ballistic missile developed by Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) of India.

  • Missile is part of Agni series of missiles, one of missile systems under original Integrated Guided Missile Development Program.

  • 1st test launch of missile was conducted on 19th April, 2012. Missile was able to hit target nearly at pin-point accuracy, within few metres of designated target point.

  • India conducted 2nd test flight of Agni-V from Wheeler Island on 15th September, 2013. Missile hit pre-designed target in Indian Ocean w/accuracy of few metres.

  • 3rd successful test flight of Agni-V was conducted on 31st January, 2015. Test used canisterised version of missile, mounted over Tatra truck.

  • 4th test of missile was successfully conducted on 26th December, 2018. This was 2ndcanisterised test of missile.

  • 5th test of missile was successfully conducted on 18th January, 2018. This was 3rdconsecutive canisterised test of missile on road-mobile launcher & 1st in its final operational configuration. Missile covered distance of 4, 900 km in 19 minutes.

  • Agni series includes Agni-1 w/range of 700 - 900 km, Agni-2 w/2000 - 3000km range, Agni-3 & Agni-4 w/3000 km to more than 4000 km range.
