Agriculture Ministry, ISRO to Team Up to Geo-Tag Agricultural Assets (Download PDF)

Agriculture Ministry joined hands with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), a wing of ISRO to geo-tag agricultural assets. The Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana or National Agriculture Development Scheme signed a MoU with the NRSC.

Highlights:

  • Ponds, crop area, warehouses, laboratories would also be geo-tagged for their real-time monitoring and effective utilisation.
  • 80 kinds of assets are created under the RKVY.
  • A pilot project has already been implemented in four states:

    • Odisha
    • Karnataka
    • Maharashtra
    • Bihar.
  • Under the MoU, the NRSC will geo-tag all agriculture assets which are created under the ’Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana in different parts of the country.
  • Geo-tagging will provide us realistic status of assets.
  • It will not only help in monitoring and utilising but also be extremely useful in formulating schemes for development in the agricultural sector.
  • It will also help in avoiding duplication of data.
  • Utilisation of space technology will help farmers to further get access to pesticide testing labs, storage infrastructure, and market-related information.
  • Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification like latitude and longitude to various media such as a photo or video.
  • Geomapping is a visual representation of the geographical location of geotagged assets layered on top of map or satellite imagery.

About RKVY:

  • Is a State Plan Scheme of Additional Central Assistance launched in August 2007 as a part of the 11th Five Year Plan.
  • It was launched to incentivize the States to provide additional resources in their State Plans over and above their baseline expenditure to bridge critical gaps.
  • Launched under the aegis of the National Development Council.
  • It seeks to achieve 4 % annual growth in agriculture through development of Agriculture and its allied sectors.
