LED lights will be now lights up rural areas under Government’s Rural LED Street Lighting National Project (SLNP) by replacing 10 lakh conventional street lights with LED lights in Andhra Pradesh’s 7 district’s Gram Panchayat.

  • The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) will be the implementation body of this project and it works under the Ministry of Power.
  • In the first phase villages of following districts will covered:

    • Guntur
    • Prakasham
    • Nellore
    • Kurnool
    • Kadapa
    • Ananthapur
    • Chittoor
  • French Development Agency Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) will found all the expense of this project.

Key Facts

  • This project will save approximately 147 million units of electricity every year which was used in the gram panchayats.
  • 12 corer tonnes of CO2 will be reduced by this project.
  • LED light’s Annual maintenance and warranty replacement responsibility is on EESL for a period of 10 years.

Background

  • Andhra Pradesh is the first state to replace conventional street lighting with LED lighting after Visakhapatnam where cyclone Hudhud has resulted extensive damage.
  • Form that time around 5, 90, 000 LED street lights has been installed by EESL in the State which has reduced approximately 65, 000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
  • Till the date 23 lakh conventional street lights have been replaced in 21 States by LED street lights.
  • ’100 cities National Programme was launched on 5th of January 2015 by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in order to replace conventional domestic lights with energy efficient LED lights.
  • Government has targeted to replace 1.34 corer conventional street lights with LED lights under the Street Light National Programme (SLNP) across the country the government.
  • LED bulbs have 50 times more long life compared to ordinary bulbs and 8 to 10 times to CFLs so it is energy and cost saving.
  • The profits of LED lights are:

    • Electricity savings
    • Reduction of load
    • Reduction of consumer bills
    • Greenhouse gas emission reductions

About LED bulbs:

  • Light-emitting diode (LED) has a very long life, 50 times more than ordinary bulbs, and 8 - 10 times that of CFLs.
  • It provides both energy and cost savings in the medium term.
  • It save energy around 24 crore units every year.

About EESL:

  • Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is a joint project of 4 power and they are:

    • PSUs – REC
    • Powergrid
    • NTPC
    • PFC
  • It is implemented for energy efficiency projects, promoting usage of energy efficient appliances, promoting the concept of Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) etc.
